The Convention and Visitors Bureau will start the season off with the Lighting of the Island on Friday, December 7, at the South Padre Island (SPI) City Hall. Santa will be on hand for photos and visits with kids of every age. Voting for the Grand Marshal will also take place at the event. The voting will be done by cans of food this year with the food being donated to the local food pantry; cash donations will also be accepted. There will be fun, food, and entertainment.
South Padre Island’s Parks, Recreation, and Beautification Committee will kick off their 12+ days of Christmas on Monday, December 12, at the South Padre Island Visitors Center with free cookies and coffee. This year the 12 + Days of Christmas include more than 30 events Island-wide. There is something for everyone! Annual favorites include the Christmas Parade, Breakfast with Santa, the City’s Awards Party, and the Kids New Year’s Eve Party. Additional events include Story Time with Santa, a tour of the brewery, and many businesses will be offering free samples of food, along with discounted prices. There will also be a dog walk, pet photos with Santa, kites, caroling, and castles, free kayak lessons, yoga lessons, and caroling in the snow. Bookmarks with the schedule of events are available at the SPI Visitors Center starting December 12 and at participating businesses.
The annual Island Christmas Parade is scheduled for Friday, December 14 at 6:15 pm. Parade entry forms can be picked up in person at the SPI City Hall or SPI Chamber of Commerce, or emailed, upon request. Email email@example.com or go to the Christmas web site www.spichristmas.com to request a form. Entry forms are due in by December 10.
Breakfast with Santa takes place on Saturday, December 15 from 9 am-Noon. Breakfast is free for all those under 12. There will be free carousel rides, photos with Santa, story time, letters to Santa and more. The event will be held at the new indoor Schlitterbahn Water resort. As an extra special treat, Schlitterbahn is offering $10 passes to all kids who want to enjoy the water park that day.
The awards ceremony announcing the winners of the parade and lighting contests will be held on Tuesday, December 18, at 6 pm. The event is held on the steps of City Hall. Santa will be in attendance as well as the winners of the kid’s parade entries to perform.
2012 will end with a bang! Fireworks will once again ring out over the bay at midnight on New Year’s Eve. The fireworks are sponsored by Louie’s Backyard.
